When we allow ourselves to expand our consciousness in what and how we do to be aware of the (much) bigger picture, we can start to see where the ego very strategically inserts itself and pretends to be "higher guidance." And, once we train ourselves to see that and flow beyond it, we can start to ask ourselves, "What if I choose differently?"
