Last weekend, one of my BFFs decided to host her wedding on Zoom! Her wedding has been postponed twice due to COVID-19, but the couple didn't want to postpone their marriage. They decided to get legally married first and then have a big party. I truly applaud their decisiveness and courage. I'm a big believer in the "right now" and people should not wait too long to get married. Tying the knots should be exciting and not a thing to cross off the list after 10 years. Some thoughts on why we shouldn't wait to get married and let anything stop us:
1) Be clear and take pride in what you want, if that means saying “I believe in love and want to get married some day!"
2) How to know if he’s the one? It’s not about the schools he went to, the job he has or where he’s from. It’s whether you envision a similar life. The best way to know is to go on a trip together - how do you guys handle unexpected twists and turns? who’s doing the planning? how did you decide on where to go? how much to spend?
3) Get married when you have the impulse! Don’t “wait” until you are “ready.” People tend to think that getting married is such a huge event and you need to test whether it would work by years of dating and living together. There’s no ultimate test. We would never know. Simply by moving in together, you can’t test combining finances, having a kid or managing a household as a couple. You can only find out by doing. There’s no perfect time to get married and there’s no standard on when you are ready. You just have to take the steps to find out.
