From the yellow circle with a mouth, via the overalls wearing plumber to the blue porcupine and the marsupial in jorts - mascots in videogames give personality to lifeless hardware. They embody the whole personality of a console, like family friendly Mario for the Super Nintendo or the rad and edgy Sonic for the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive. They also sometimes spectacularily fail at reaching fame, like Awesome Possum. We look at which mascots made it and which didn't, how they did so and why they were the most powerful marketing tools of the retro gaming era. We also talk about mascots then and now - from the humanoid animals of the 1990's to the more realistic human characters which are the mascots of today's videogame generation.
