What do we mean when we say the world needs Jesus? Working through 1 Peter 4:7-11, this message pushes past the familiar phrase toward something more honest — that a hurting world needs the teaching, the actions, and the love of Jesus made visible through his people. It's a call to stay awake and stay connected: to pray before we try to pour out, to keep our love for one another fervent, to welcome each other without grumbling, and to put every gift to work for the sake of the family. Like a brand-new hose that can't do a thing until it's hooked to the water, we have nothing to give until we're connected to the source. A grounded, practical look at what it means to live as exiles who still have something real to offer the world around us.

1 Peter 3:18–22 is one of the strangest, most debated passages in the New Testament — the kind that makes you slow down and wonder what to do with it. Underneath the mystery, though, is something steadying: Jesus died once for all, the just for the unjust, to bring us to God. This message sits with the sheer cost of that access, then asks an honest question — is Jesus actually everything to us, or have we quietly settled for a "Jesus plus" faith, adding just enough of the world to take the edge off? On a morning given over to baptism, it's a fitting place to be: the old life left behind, a new one coming up out of the water, anchored to the One who never changes even when everything around us does.

What do we do when the culture around us runs on outrage — when a single post can rally strangers to judgment, and canceling has become the default response to being wronged? Writing to scattered churches living as exiles, Peter points to a different way: keep a tender heart, hold onto humility, and when insulted, answer with blessing instead of retaliation. It's the pattern of Jesus, who prayed for the very people harming him, and of David, who spent ten years refusing to strike back at Saul while trusting the God who sees everything. None of this dismisses real injustice. It rests on the confidence that God will one day make all things right — and it starts where we have the most agency: asking the Holy Spirit to trade our hearts of stone for hearts of flesh.

1 Peter 3:1-7 is one of those passages that's been misused for centuries — twisted to keep people down when it was never written to do that. Peter wasn't setting national policy; he was showing believers how to carry kingdom values inside unjust systems. And Jesus gave us the model: loud about the oppression of others, quiet about his own suffering. Along the way we meet Hagar — a woman fleeing abuse into the wilderness, where she encountered El Roi, the God who sees. He saw her there. And he sees you, in whatever unjust, unequal, or difficult place you're standing right now. We don't have to absorb every cultural narrative around us. We can respond with kingdom principles instead — and make the invisible God visible while we do.

One day after the Fourth of July, our path through 1 Peter landed on the hardest verse yet: "Slaves, submit to your masters — even the harsh ones." We slowed down, stepped into the Roman world Peter's readers actually lived in, and found the way of the exile — a third path between revolt and compromise, where our deepest loyalty stays with a greater King. Daniel, the Serenity Prayer, and yeast hidden in eighty pounds of flour all make an appearance.

The whiplash is real. Fellow Christians landing on completely opposite sides — defending different things, denouncing different things — and yet somehow following the same Jesus. In 1 Peter 2:11-17, Peter writes from Rome under Nero and still has the audacity to say "honor the emperor." Not unconditional obedience. Not passive acceptance. Something harder: living as resident aliens in the very place you've always called home, conducting yourself among the Americans in a way that makes the invisible God visible. The question this message leaves you with heading into the 4th of July weekend — are you leaning politically, or have you started bowing?

It's easy to find your worth in what you accomplish for God — and Jesus knew that tendency well. In Luke 10, the seventy-two disciples returned from their assignment excited about what had happened: demons submitting, real power, visible results. Jesus redirects them somewhere quieter: "Rejoice that your names are written in heaven." Before his first miracle in Matthew 3, the Father had already spoken over him — "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." The delight wasn't a reward for performance. It was the starting point. This message is about what changes when we actually believe that — and what it looks like to stop approaching God like we have to earn our way in.

Malice sounds like an old word, the kind that surely doesn't apply to you. Then you hear it defined as ill will, an actual desire to see someone suffer, and it rings a bell. Peter doesn't let us off easy on this one. In 1 Peter 2, he calls us to trade that appetite for something else: the plain goodness of God. From there, the message turns to Jesus as the cornerstone, the foundation a whole new structure gets built on. He's not a puzzle piece you add to your life. Once you weren't a people. Now you are.

The Thai cave rescue is the kind of story you can't stop thinking about. Thirteen people trapped two and a half miles underground, water rising, and then — on day ten — two divers surface in chamber nine and find them alive. They're found. But they're not home yet. Promise, presence, provision — and still a treacherous way out ahead. That space between being found and being brought all the way home is where Peter writes from in 1 Peter 1, and it's where most of us are living. Salvation has broken into our lives. The rescue isn't finished yet. So what do we actually do in the in-between? This message draws on four things Peter wants his readers to hold in conscious awareness — not just truths we've heard before, but things that, when we keep them in front of us, actually shape how we love, live, and wait.
