Jane Hammond of the Daily Press in Newport News, Virginia, discusses the anniversary of the rampage, in which a student gunman killed 32 people before taking his own life. In the decade that’s followed, Virginia has put strict new protocols in place related to emergency response, as well as new standards for mental health services. 

How safe do today’s students feel on campus? What new technologies are in place to quickly warn people of a potential threat? And what lessons have law enforcement and campus officials learned from the investigation of the 2007 shootings, which found that faulty assumptions, missteps and miscommunications hampered the early response?
