The upcoming smart glasses from Apple are designed as a high-end wearable device focused on AI-driven interaction and environmental awareness. Unlike traditional augmented reality headsets, the initial version of these glasses will likely not feature a built-in display, instead relying on an array of sensors to provide an "all-day AI companion" experience.
Key Design and Hardware Features The device is expected to prioritize a premium build quality and fashion-forward aesthetics, offering multiple frame styles and material options, including metal and plastic. To accommodate a wide range of users, there are plans to support prescription lenses, potentially leveraging existing custom lens ordering mechanisms. While early prototypes required external battery packs, newer iterations have successfully embedded all components, including the battery and chip, directly into the frames.
A custom-designed in-house chip, possibly based on the architecture used in the Apple Watch, is expected to power the device to ensure high performance and responsive AI functionality. While the glasses will have some on-device processing capabilities, they are primarily designed as an iPhone accessory. They will likely rely on a connection to a smartphone for advanced tasks, such as music playback and complex AI assistance.
Core Functionality and Visual Intelligence At the heart of the glasses is a dual-camera system: one high-resolution lens for capturing photos and spatial video, and a second camera dedicated to computer vision and environmental analysis. This hardware powers a central feature known as Visual Intelligence, allowing users to interact with their surroundings through a virtual assistant.
Users will be able to perform several hands-free tasks, including:
Real-time analysis: Identifying plants, animals, and landmarks, or getting descriptions of their surroundings.
Live translation and navigation: Receiving turn-by-turn directions and spoken translations of text found in the environment.
Communication and Audio: Making phone calls, listening to music, and interacting with Siri.
Privacy protections: An LED light is expected to be included to indicate when the camera is active, ensuring that those nearby are aware when recording is taking place.
Furthermore, recent acquisitions in machine learning may enable the glasses to interpret silent or whispered voice input by analyzing micro facial movements, which would allow for more discreet interactions in public settings.
Market Positioning and Future Roadmap This product is positioned to compete directly with existing smart glasses from major rivals like Meta and Google. Apple intends to distinguish itself through superior ecosystem integration and hardware refinement. Mass production is reportedly targeted for late 2026, with a public release expected in 2027.
The display-less version is viewed as an entry point into the wearable AI space. A second-generation model featuring augmented reality (AR) capabilities—incorporating displays that can overlay digital information onto the real world—is already projected for the future, potentially as early as 2028. These future versions may use advanced technologies like waveguide optics or OLEDoS displays to provide a more immersive visual experience.
