Publisher's Summary:
An absolutely harrowing first-person account of the 94th Infantry Division's bold campaign to break through Hitler's "impregnable" Siegfried line at the end of World War II.
Eighteen-year-old William Foley was afraid the war would be over before he got there, but the rifleman was sent straight to the front lines, arriving January 25, 1945 - just in time to join the 94th Infantry Division poised at Hitler's legendary West Wall. By the time Foley finally managed to grab a few hours sleep three nights later, he'd already fought in a bloody attack that left 60 percent of his battalion dead or wounded. That was just the beginning of one of the toughest, bloodiest challenges the 94th would ever face: breaking through the Siegfried Line. Now, in Visions from a Foxhole, Foley recaptures that desperate, nerve-shattering struggle in all its horror and heroism.

William Foley has done us all a great service by telling his story
William Foley has done us all a great service by telling his story. If you want to know what life was like living (and dying) on the front lines in WWII when the Germans were throwing everything they had left at a last ditch effort to stop us at the border to the "fatherland", then this tells it well. Until I read William's account I never understand what our soldiers had to endure on the front lines. Now I know at least a little
A literal insight to a well told story
There are many well told first person accounts of what life, and death, was like for the U.S. WWII American soldier. This is one of them. Foley's story doesn't get bogged down in pre-war civilian life, nor does it spin its wheels in pre-combat garrison life. The reader gets into hellish combat quickly. The added bonus to Foley's tale is that he was a talented illustrator during the war and he captured pencil images of an experience usually relegated to the reader's imagination. My only complaint is that these amazing drawings should have been dispersed throughout the book with the corresponding experience and not at the end in gallery form. It's like having a fine meal with great wine, you don't want the merlot at the end of your dinner! But don't let that minor complaint stop you from buying this read. It's well written and worth it.
An amazing hero. My only issue was that the author ...
Book is very well written and the author kept my attention throughout the Chapters and the different battles that unfolded. An amazing hero.
My only issue was that the author mentions that the soldiers were unaware and not responsible for Hitler's actions.
Hitler's was elected by the German people and he made his intentions very clear before and after he was elected.
I wouldn't call the German army blameless for Hitler's actions.
Foley has done a great service
Much, if not all, of what
William Foley says about his
WWII ETO experience has the
complete ring of truth.
As you talk to various 80 year olds about their WWII combat experiences you soon learn the fluid nature of these rapidly changing combat events. Many times it is hard to see or hear anything beyond a hundred yards.
From what I hear from my father, who was severely wounded in ETO WWII infantry combat, is that war isn't glorious, but ugly, brutal, hateful assembly line murder.
