Often in Asian upbringing, saying “I don’t know” is associated with getting ridiculed or punished by parents, teachers, and even peers (though none of these are unique to Asian culture). Janet and Brian talk share their experiences around how they’ve dealt with this in their life and what they’ve learned about being free of the shame of not knowing what society says you should. The environment and people that you’re around plays a huge part in your ability to learn and pick up new skills. Largely in part to the criticism with lack of direction that many of us faced when we were kids carry onto adulthood, my folks tend to shy away from having and sharing new ideas, learning new skills, etc. Unfortunately as adults if we’re not aware of this, we tend to perpetuate the cycle.
