As soon as I left the tour, I started reflecting on this question even more. What is success? What does success mean to you as coach? 3 months down the line, I had found the answer. The story that helped me change my philosophy was by an Archbishop who was on his deathbed surrounded by his followers. He looked at me and said, I lay on my deathbed today and for the first time I realize I am still the same man I was at 20. He said to me, Nevil if you would like to change the world first start by changing who you are.
Lessons:
· If I did not have a teachable spirit, I would not have been able to change the way I coach. One key to life is the ability to be a student of life, be a lifelong learner. Every day I wake up and go to a school called life.
· Write down your struggles and face them head first, if you can write them down they will not have power over you. You will only be able to succeed at whatever you want to do if you are willing to accept your limitations and start working on them.
· Have a look at the people around you, you are the sum total of the people you hang around. Some decisions are hard but are needed. Make sure you are with people who you can contribute to and people who can contribute to you. Be a mentor and a mentee.
For success as an athlete, we will look at a question form Nicole from South Africa.
The question is my friends all play in the national team, I feel like I am falling behind. And am no longer at their level. How do I stay motivated and keep focusing on my goals without getting side tracked or being demotivated?
Answer:
1. You are not falling behind, everyone has their own journey.
2. Enjoy the company of your friends without being jealousy or envious. Live a full life.
3. Work as hard as you can every single day to have peace in your heart after every performance. Your work ethic determines the success you obtain, if you are willing to work no one can stop you.
Kobe Bryant example 13 to 15 years.
