  • # 18 Green Wadham: making a sustainable College | with Frances Lloyd and Joe Bull

Director of Sustainability, Frances Lloyd, is now one year into her post, and in this episode, she talks to Tutorial Fellow in Biology, Joe Bull, about Wadham College's progress in becoming sustainable.

They discuss a wide range of Wadham initiatives, from reducing energy use and carbon emissions across the College estate to improving biodiversity, developing sustainable food and energy policies, and embedding sustainability into major projects.

We also hear how data is helping Wadham make more targeted decisions, including the use of smart sensors to better understand energy use and identify where interventions can have the greatest impact. The discussion explores Wadham’s work to understand not only its carbon footprint but also its wider impact on nature through areas such as procurement and supply chains.

Alongside the technical work, the episode highlights the importance of engaging the whole College community, from students, staff and Fellows to schools and organisations beyond Oxford. With growing recognition for Wadham’s sustainability work, the conversation reflects on what has been achieved so far, the challenges of putting ambitious strategies into practice, and the priorities for the year ahead.

Sustainability is one of the four central pillars of our Life-Changing World-Changing campaign, which will launch in early 2027. Our Sustainability Strategy is one of the most ambitious of any Oxford college, covering energy, biodiversity, water, food, supply chains and investment. Advancing Sustainability is the first phase of this strategy. With a fundraising target of £10 million, it will focus on the buildings that matter most to our community and have the greatest impact on our carbon footprint.
