Unlock Your English

Wait, Hope and Expect

Listen Later

Hello and welcome back. I'm glad you are here.

In this short lesson we look at the verbs WAIT, HOPE and EXPECT.

These verbs are used to express anticipation and wishes.

In some languages, for example Spanish, there may only be one verb that covers all three meanings, which is only evident in the context of the sentence.

In Spanish, the verb ESPERAR is used:

I wait for the bus
Espero el autobus
I hope they win the match.
Espero que ganan el partido.
I expect them to win as they are the best team.
Espero que ganan, son los mejores.

The audio lesson gives more examples in English to show the difference between the 3 verbs.
