Stillness and waiting before diving in is not what many of us do very well. This episode was inspired by Joshua 3 and the understanding I was blessed with to see the important role waiting can have on our lives and others' lives.
When I was given the initial vision of the dam that is holding us in the muck and mire which started this whole water analogy, I never pictured this waiting at the edge of the water so to be honest, I don't know exactly how this fits into the timeline of events because we went from a mud puddle to flowing waters and navigating this to standing on the river bank, but when I came across Joshua 3 (and a lot more in Joshua) it stood out as being very significant in this adventure so bare with me. We can dip back into that water shortly.
Joshua 3:8-10, 13, 17
When they gave time to work, they were now on dry firm ground and it didn't just affect them, it affected others and kept them safe. Are you picking up yet when I am putting down? Really, what God laid before me, I am just laying in your path. The impact of this one act of stillness and obedience has far greater reach than imaginable.
Joshua 5:1, 8
He doesn't always work how we expect but he is always working and this was BETTER than they could imagine.
I was given the perfect example the other day of how I (any many others) tend to communicate and rely on God. I went to a different post office that was sort of out of the normal line of travel but still on the way home. I left and was headed home and I turned on my GPS because I wasn't 100% sure the best way to get home since it was mildly unfamiliar. I realize where I am at and went against the GPS. I felt I didn't need to rely on it anymore so I head home the way that was more familiar to me. It kept wanting me to turn around and I thought how ridiculous so I turned it off. Imagine my surprise when I came to the "road closed" sign. I was really frustrated and I have to turn where I am, even less familiar of roads and now the time to get home has almost doubled. Right when all of this happened, I was listening to the most recent Life church sermon and he was saying how Ruth didn't plan for all these things to happen but now God was using it regardless. I thought to myself, "well, I didn't plan for a road closed sign". Then, all of these thoughts started flooding in. Sometimes we rely on God when we feel uncertain (just like the GPS or what some people call the God positioning system) and then when we feel like we have it, we turn it off. We stop listening or seeking and we rely on ourselves. Sometimes, we pass by what was intended for us but sometimes, like in this case, we still end up in the same place but our way took far longer than it needed too. It also took me going back to the GPS (how we often need to back to relying on God after we got ourselves into trouble) to get myself out of the jam. Then there is the thought, but what if I had just waited? What if I had just relied fully on God (GPS) from the start? How much better would the path have been or in some cases, how much better might the destination end up?
Let's reframe waiting and being still and realize we are still acting but in more of a biblical way.
Today I ended a plan called "Crazy Faith" by Michael Todd and he said, "Don't waste your wait. The waiting is where God makes you into who you need to be when he gets you there.
