Wake Up My Soul
At the start of a new year, we pause and look back—at joys and pain, successes and failures, people we gained and lost. Life gives us reasons to celebrate and to grieve. But a new year is not only about reflection; it’s about a deeper question: How do we want to live now? When life is short and God’s love eternal, what truly matters?
A new year brings new plans and goals. It’s good to have them, but not to overload ourselves. No one says, “I want to be more busy than last year.” The quality of life is connected to the heart. We can look alive, even religious, and yet be spiritually asleep. “The hour has already come for you to wake up.” (Romans 13:11)
Our series Close to God reminds us that closeness to God shapes life now and forever. It is not automatic—it must be cultivated and protected. Just as overeating and oversleeping weaken the body, spiritual neglect weakens the soul. Hunger is healthy.
Spiritual hunger is a gift and a responsibility. We don’t create it; we respond to it. What we feed grows. What we neglect weakens. A distracted soul slowly loses its appetite for God.
Awakening comes through rhythm, not intensity. Jesus lived with daily rhythms of prayer and Scripture (Mark 1:35). Not emotional highs, but steady attentiveness.
Daily Scripture – SOAP
S – Scripture: what does the text say?
O – Observation: what stands out to me?
A – Application: how should this shape my life?
P – Prayer: respond honestly and personally to God.
Add prayer and fasting to realign desire, and vision alignment to seek God’s kingdom first. Busyness for God can replace closeness to God.
The key question is not Am I successful or active enough? But Am I awake, responsive, and close to God? Awake people change the world.
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)
Prayer: Lord, wake us up. Restore our hunger and teach us to stay close to You. Amen.
