“With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
-Micah 6:6-8
Micah was a prophet to Judah and Israel. He lived during a time of outright rebellion against God’s laws. Through his ministry God confronted Judah and Israel because of their sin. Because of their idolatry they were unjust and ethically perverse. The powerful preyed on the weak. The rich abused the poor. The insiders were violent to the disenfranchised. If a person was on the margins of society they were treated badly. They claimed to follow the Lord, but their profession of faith was not backed up with action and obedience. “What do you want me to do, Lord”. Micah was reminding them they were obligated and indebted to the Lord.Evidently they were not so far gone that they didn’t realize they owed God something. At least they were aware of the fact that God had a claim on their lives. The question is, how do I relate to God if He does have a claim on my life. What do I owe God? “what does God want from me?”
