Faith is an intriguing word, a fascinating topic. What is faith? Is it trust, or belief, or knowledge, or understanding? Is it all of the above, none of the above, or some? Defining ‘faith’ is a bit like trying to nail jelly to a wall. Easy meanings escape us, they simply can’t be nailed down.

What we can say is that faith exists somewhere between proof and doubt in an unmapped and indescribable realm. If something can be completely and utterly proven to be untrue then faith is unreasonable. If something can be completely or utterly proven to be true then faith is no longer necessary.

God is larger and beyond our capacity to prove or disprove and so Faith is both reasonable and appropriate. It exists beyond what we can know, beyond what we can prove, beyond what we can believe.

Faith is born in that gentle moment when imagination and hope join together, when we choose to move beyond the boundaries of trust, belief, and knowledge, into a place beyond places. The transformative experience of a loving, gracious, and generous God.
