WalMart Mom Realizes She Is Going To Prison

Listen Later

A mother sits in a courtroom. Her hands are cuffed. Her face is blank. The judge reads the verdict. Guilty on all counts. The mother's eyes widen. Her lips part. She looks at her family in the gallery. Her children are crying. She will not see them graduate. She will not see them marry. She will not see them become parents. She is going to prison.

In this episode, I examine the case of a mother who was convicted of forcing her child to eat feces in a Walmart bathroom. The surveillance footage was played for the jury. The jury deliberated for less than two hours. The mother's defense argued that she was under extreme stress, that she was not in control of her actions. The prosecution argued that the footage showed a woman who knew exactly what she was doing. The mother was sentenced to twenty years in prison. Her children were placed in foster care.

The moment of realization came when the judge announced the sentence. The mother had maintained her innocence throughout the trial. She had believed that a jury would understand, that they would see her as a victim of circumstance. When the verdict was read, her face changed. The denial collapsed. She understood that her life was over. The children she had abused would grow up without her. The family she had destroyed would never forgive her.

Turn down the lights, put on your headphones, and press play because the Walmart mom thought she would walk free. She learned that actions have consequences.
