In 2017, it was firmly believed that War of the Planet of the Apes was going to be the end of the franchise. Everyone from director Matt Reeves to Andy Serkis were in the press saying so. And they went into the making of War with all that intent in mind. So they went all out to make it so. The result, while not as successful as 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, was still an underlying success, grossing over $490 million at the box office.
