A Great Historical Account of the Second War of Independence! !!
"The War of 1812; A History from Beggining to End", provides the reader with an excellent historical chronical of the war that ensured the lasting independence and soverignity of the United States (US). Through use of numerous primary and secondary source materials and a well written narrative the author delivers an excellent read. He begins by demonstrating that the hostilities that became the War of 1812 had actually existed between the British and Americans to before the French Indian War (1754-1763), including the the American Revolution (1775-1783), and after because of a generalized view within Great Britian's that if not for the seeminly unending wars with France since the mid 18th Century the upstart United States might not have lost its colonial status. This view led to the numerous hostile incidents of British watships interfering with US shipping and the tmpressment of American sailors/citizens into British service throughout the 1800s. These hostilites between the US and Britian boiled over when the US discovered that England had begun supplying Native Americans in Canada with weapons and a promise to restore all lands in what would later be considered the American Midwest to the natives. And so on June 18, 1812, the War they had been fighting for years officially began. The author provides an excellent account and analysis of the key events of the war which ended on Christmas Eve 1814, when US and British representatives signed a treaty in Ghent, Belgium. In the treaty both sides agreed to reinstate all lands to the state they existed in 1811. In effect the war ended in a stalemate.
This book was researched, written and published by Hourly Histories. Hourly Histories are a rather extensive collection of concise historical accounts designed to provide the reader with all the information they required to have a fairly comprehensive knowlede about important people, places, and events in approximately one hour. Further their greater purpose is to increase reader's interest in history and promote further reading of history books.
While the War of 1812 ended in basically in a draw, the author discusses some important outcomesI found interesting. They include:
The peace that resulted between the US and Great Britain has continued for over two centuries. During that time the countries have acted as friends and allies in the international arena and many might argue that Britian is our closes and most important ally, and hopefully this relationship will continue in years to come.
In Canada the War had an importance that makes it something every school child learns about, probably more so than their US counterparts. To them the war was a fight for national survival against US oppression. Their suspicion of the American way of life then influenced their own government as they became an independent nation.
