🎙️ War Update InfoPod — Who or what is Hezbollah? Good morning. You’re listening to the War Update InfoPod — a clear look at what has changed overnight, and what it might mean. As tensions rise in the Middle East, the name Hezbollah is appearing frequently in news reports. So what exactly is Hezbollah? Hezbollah is a powerful political and military organisation based in Lebanon. The name means “Party of God” in Arabic. It was formed in the early 1980s during the Lebanese civil war and the Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon. From the beginning, Hezbollah combined two roles.
It developed as an armed militia fighting Israel, but it also built a political movement that operates inside Lebanon’s government and parliament. Today it functions as both a political party and one of the most heavily armed non-state forces in the world. The group is closely aligned with Iran, which provides funding, weapons, and training. Hezbollah is often described as part of Iran’s regional network of allied forces sometimes called the “axis of resistance.” Militarily, Hezbollah is believed to possess tens of thousands of rockets and missiles positioned in southern Lebanon. These weapons are capable of reaching deep into Israel, which is why Israel views the organisation as one of its most serious security threats. Supporters of Hezbollah see it as a resistance movement defending Lebanon against Israeli aggression.
Critics argue it operates as an Iranian proxy force and destabilises the region. Because of its military activities, several countries — including the United States and the United Kingdom — classify Hezbollah, or parts of the organisation, as a terrorist group. The reason Hezbollah matters in the current crisis is that it sits on Israel’s northern border. If it launches large-scale attacks or enters the conflict fully, the war could spread quickly into a much broader regional confrontation. That possibility is one of the major escalation risks analysts are watching closely. That’s the situation for now. You’re up to date — and we’ll watch what changes next.
