For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn't just a game - it's a way of life. The obsession started 10 years ago, and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down Warcross players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty-hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. To make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks in to the opening game of the international Warcross Championships - only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.
Convinced she's going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game's creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year's tournament in order to uncover a security problem...and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika's whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she's only dreamed of. Another "dumbed down" YA novel...
I was really into the premise/summary of this book and snapped up the audiobook pretty quickly. I was quickly disappointed. This is your typical mary jane character + inexplicably besotted billionaire/popular guy in a YA sci-fi, and both main characters got on my nerves. The main is not at all humble or realistic, and literally thinks the decisions everyone makes are because of her. (They usually are, which is also weird.) Kind of reminds me of Twilight. If you liked that kind of thing, maybe this will float your boat. I was hoping there would be a magical plot twist + resolution that would explain and justify half of the dumb decisions/weird illogical jumps these characters made, but the ending is very abrupt and explains very little. The only "twist" is pretty obvious and very hastily revealed. This is very clearly written with a sequel in mind, but from a plot standpoint this book does not stand on its own.
It might have been easier to overlook the plot if it were written a bit better, but some sentences/phrases were just a disaster and you could tell they were awkward for the narrator to say. Very unimaginative language and the writing itself is kind of... bad. Like, I'm pretty sure any tween with an interest in books could churn out a similar masterpiece. Gems like "it jars me, hard" and "my fists tighten" are all over the place. At first I thought it was the narration making the writing seem dumber than it actually is - it sounds like it's read by Nancy Drew, and the end of nearly every third sentence is read out like it's a cliffhanger. It's not, it's not even the end of the chapter. And it is done with super inane details which makes it kind of weird.
