Watch Your Speed – Here is the Spain Road Traffic Forecast

Listen Later

As the August holidays get underway, the traffic situation across Spain this week is expected to be challenging. The DGT has just concluded its ‘Special Operation August 1st’ weekend, but the roads will remain busy with ongoing holiday travel.

Major routes to coastal areas, especially along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, will experience high volumes. There is also a Europe-wide speeding campaign by ROADPOL, which will see intensified police presence and enforcement across the national road network.

Drivers should be prepared for potential delays, and should be aware of numerous local fiestas and events which will cause localised disruption in towns and cities.

Monday, August 4, 2025

The week begins with traffic levels expected to be heavy, especially on the main motorways leading out of major urban centres like Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia, as the last of the holidaymakers head to their destinations.

The A-7 (Mediterranean Motorway) and AP-7 are likely to be particularly congested in the Valencian Community and Andalucia.

The European Traffic Police Network, ROADPOL, begins its week-long speeding enforcement campaign, so drivers should expect an increased police presence and speed checks on all major roads.

In Teulada, near Moraira in the Valencian Community, the “Sants de la Pedra” fiesta continues, which may cause minor local road disruptions. In Barcelona, the Grec Festival, which has been running since late June, concludes today, potentially causing some localised delays around the city centre.

Tuesday, August 5, 2025

Traffic is expected to follow a more standard weekday pattern, with commuter congestion around major cities during the morning and late afternoon.

The ROADPOL speeding campaign continues, so vigilance on speed limits is advised (always).

Localised traffic disruption can be expected in Las Nieves (As Neves), in Galicia, near the Portuguese border, due to the Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme.

Wednesday, August 6, 2025

The middle of the week should see a general improvement in traffic flow compared to the start of the week.

The ROADPOL speeding campaign remains in effect, with police continuing to focus on speed enforcement.

Thursday, August 7, 2025

Anticipate an increase in traffic volume in the late afternoon and evening as some holidaymakers begin to travel for the upcoming weekend. Routes leading to popular coastal and leisure destinations are likely to see heavier traffic.

The ROADPOL speeding campaign continues, so drivers are reminded to adhere to speed limits to avoid fines, and reduce the risk to lives.

Friday, August 8, 2025

This will be a busy day on the roads as the DGT predicts significant movements for the weekend. Outbound traffic from major cities will be very heavy from early afternoon, with routes to the coasts, particularly the A-7, AP-7, A-9, and A-4, experiencing high volumes and potential congestion.

The ROADPOL speeding campaign continues.

The Weekend

Traffic is expected to be very heavy on Saturday morning, with many people travelling to their holiday destinations or for weekend leisure activities. Routes to the coast will be particularly busy, and congestion is anticipated around major tourist hubs.

Sunday will see a significant volume of return traffic in the late afternoon and evening, with queues expected on main motorways heading back towards cities like Madrid and Barcelona.

Drivers should be prepared for longer journey times and check real-time traffic updates before travelling.

Next Week

Looking ahead, the week of the 11th to the 15th of August will continue to be a very busy period for Spanish roads. The DGT will be planning a ‘Special Operation August 15th’ to manage the high volume of traffic expected for the public holiday on Friday, August 15th, which is the Feast of the Assumption. This will likely result in a long weekend for many, creating another period of intense travel and potential congestion.
