It’s hot in the city lately and extreme heat can be dangerous. Be sure to drink plenty of water even before feeling thirsty and stay in a cool place. It is important to watch for symptoms of heat illness. These include:
- dizziness/fainting
- nausea/vomiting
- rapid breathing and heartbeat
- extreme thirst
- decreased urination with unusually dark urine
- lack of sweat
- confusion
- fainting
- unconsciousness
So if you’ve been thirsting for an active transportation adventure but worried about all the things listed above, worry no more!
The City of Edmonton has activated its extreme weather response to keep vulnerable people, which can include you, safe during the hot weather. That means
- Peace Officers are carrying water bottles for distribution
- You can grab some shade AND water at leisure centres
- River Valley Park fountains have been started, and finally
- the City of Edmonton has adapted five fire hydrants into water stations for access to free potable water. We know of two, one near Michael Phair Park at 104 Street, and the other at Stony plain Road. All you need is a water bottle!
