Consumers continually gravitate towards a preferred product or service until one day they begin to realize that product or service has fundamentally changed; the quality has degraded to such a degree that the original product or service is no longer recognizable.
This is because companies and businesses can't resist lowering quality to increase profit margins. They hope the difference isn't noticeable, but as the quality continues to go downhill, more and more consumers become aware that the product or service is not as good and adjust their buying habits.
