Wayne Hay: Questions around Lion Air plane's 'repairs' day before crash

Listen Later

Indonesian authorities have plenty of questions to answer about yesterday's fatal Jakarta plane crash which left 189 people dead.
The Lion Air flight crashed into the sea and sank soon after taking off from the Indonesian capital.
The new Boeing 737 Max 8 was being flown in good weather by experienced pilots.
Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay told Mike Hosking they requested assistance ten minutes before communications cut off.
"What was the problem that lead to the request being made in the first place and whether there was any communication in that 10 minute period."
"The pilot requested this turn around just three minutes into the flight, we know that was all it took before some sort of problem developed on that plane and he made that request to air traffic control...the request was granted but then 10 minutes afterwards they lost communication with the plane."
The plane went into service just months ago but had gone in for repairs ahead of its final flight.
Hay said there are questions around what repairs were being made and whether they are responsible for the crash.
"What was the fault on the preceding flight, the day before. It had a problem before it took off from Bali to Jakarta, the problem was rectified and the flight landed safely in Jakarta on Sunday night and then took off first thing Monday morning."
