Richard Chew is joined by Amy McGrath, political and national security analyst, former fighter pilot and U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran, founder of Democratic Majority Action PAC, 2020 Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate and 2018 Democratic nominee for U.S. House, author of “Honor Bound: An American Story of Dreams and Service,” and co-host, with Denver Riggleman, of the politics and national security podcast “Truth in the Barrel.”
Key quote from McGrath on President Donald Trump's threat to send troops to Democratically run cities like Chicago:
"We all want to tackle crime. We all want to hold criminals accountable. That's one of the most important things that we can invest in, is better policing, with police departments, and those need to be funded. So let me get that out of the way.
"But one, there is no emergency that warrants these deployments of federal troops, our military in our cities. This is a misuse of our military. We do not need to be having our United States soldiers, our United States military patrolling our streets like we're some martial law police state in a Third World country. It's just not what Americans want. It's not in our history. It's never been in our history. We actually fought a war against tyrants that wanted to use soldiers on our land. It's not who we are.
"And then the other piece of this is there's a time and a place where, within the law, you can do this if the local officials want you to. In other words, if there is an emergency. Doing this against the wishes of elected officials -- these people are elected officials; they're mayors, governors in those states and cities -- is absolutely wrong.
"And the third piece of this is this whole idea of being tough on crime because of this is a complete myth. It is a myth! Remember, the president himself pardoned 1,500 -- not not five, not 50 -- 1,500 convicted criminals who ransacked our Capitol on January 6th, and that included men who used bear spray and bats and batons and poles to attack police officers. This is a man, our president, who's been charged with 88 different counts of crimes, convicted of 34 felonies. These guys are not tough on crime. This is for political reasons, and our military should not be used in this manner."
