Richard is joined by Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-IL).
Kelly, who is vice chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, discussed the Federal Firearm Licensee Act, a bicameral bill she recently introduced with Illinois Senator Dick Durbin that seeks to update the laws governing licensed firearm dealers to prevent gun trafficking and theft.
"And it also repeals some long-standing appropriations riders that have really stopped enforcement of existing laws by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives," Kelly told WCPT. "Really, their hands have been tied in so many ways, and they -- even from their mouth -- haven't gotten the resources that they've needed to check out gun stores and other places. And it does more in increasing record retention and electronic data management for sharing background checks, which is very important."
Additionally, she addressed the potential impact of $230 billion in food assistance cuts that Republicans have proposed in the farm bill. "That would affect, in my district, almost 190,000 people," Kelly said. "But what people don't realize [is] that if we do that, that not only affects people that are hungry, it affects the farmers, it affects the grocery stores or supermarkets. It's all tied together."
