WCPT 820 Interview: Ron Fierstein

Listen Later

Richard is joined by Ron Fierstein, author of “A Triumph of Genius: Edwin Land, Polaroid, and the Kodak Patent War” and contributor to the American Experience documentary “Mr. Polaroid: Everything Changed in an Instant,” debuting May 19 on PBS stations.

Fierstein highlighted the impact of Polaroid and its founder, Edwin Land, on photography and modern technology. Land invented the thin sheet plastic polarizer at 19, leading to the creation of Polaroid. During WWII, Land contributed to the war effort and later advised the CIA. Polaroid's instant photography revolutionized the industry, and its influence extended to the fine art world, with figures like Ansel Adams and Andy Warhol using the cameras. Fierstein also made note of Polaroid's "legendary and really important patent lawsuit" against Kodak and talked briefly about his brother, the actor-playwright-screenwriter Harvey Fierstein.
