Richard Chew is joined by Texas Democratic State Rep. Trey Martinez-Fischer.
Martinez-Fischer discussed Texas House Democrats' recent quorum break that delayed passage of the congressional redistricting bill advanced by state Republicans, drawing international attention to the matter. "We had to sound the alarm and get people to pay attention," he told WCPT. The Republican-controlled House passed the new map last Wednesday, and the Senate followed suit late Friday.
"On Saturday morning, the first lawsuit was filed, a 67-page complaint in federal court claiming that the state is intentionally discriminating against minority voters," Martinez-Fischer said. "And I imagine by the end of the day today, there'll be several more lawsuits filed. And this thing will go to the courthouse. Even though the governor may try to sign it into law this coming week, he's going to find himself answering to an injunction in federal court, and I think that that's going to be the next step."
Martinez-Fischer emphasized the importance of the Voting Rights Act and cited examples of Republicans "packing, cracking and stacking" districts to dilute minority voting power. He expressed optimism that Democratic strongholds like California will be able to neutralize the Texas gerrymander with their own redrawn maps. The California plan will need the approval of voters in a November 4 special election.
"I was able to look at a poll that was done in the state of California that showed 57 percent of Californians agree with [Gov. Gavin] Newsom's proposal," Martinez-Fischer said. "So it sounds like it's off to a good start. And I know in conversations with [House Democratic] Leader [Hakeem] Jeffries and other Democratic leaders across the country, it sounds like they're going to put a robust campaign with plenty of resources to get that over the line."
