What words would you use to describe the feelings you are trying to bring across with your work?
Definitely joy. I would say, definitely my elevator line would be I hope my pots are like Tolkien remarking on celebrating life. The joy and celebration of life and the wonder to be here. That’s where I want to be making art in the world.
Is there an area that you “stole” but it eventually became your own voice and got converted into the way you do things?
Yeah, I mean the big, probably obvious connection is Justin Rothshank. I did a seminar at his house once and he’s the master of decals for sure. So in researching his name when I was doing a grad program his name came up a lot for sure, but I hope I evolved away from what he is doing to some degree, into my own.
Do you protect your influences at all so that you are not tempted to copy?
Yeah, that’s a funny thingNo, I don’t. I really understand that idea and I know people approach that in different ways. I have a friend who is a musician and he doesn’t like to listen to other music any more. I don’t personally do that, but I understand the idea of it.
Do you plan a piece when you are thinking about the collage, the layout?
That work I don’t plan it. That’s pretty fluid and each piece is different for sure. They are all my drawings. I think I have 27 different cone flower drawings now. They are drawings or watercolors. I just kind of freestyle that. What the piece wants.
What is one thing that you would like to develop in your work that is presently not there?
I definitely feel myself going more sculptural, heading in that direction. And I think I always have been, and I feel this undercurrent kind of pushing me there a bit more lately. I am just starting a series of presidents’ heads jugs. So I am working on my third one but I would like to make all the presidents’ heads.
