Defence Minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, says the number of soldiers deployed to help quell the violent riots and plundering in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng was determined, amongst others, by the cost involved and the assessment of the situation on the ground. Two-thousand-500 troops were deployed to help bring violence and looting to an end, while 76-thousand were deployed during lockdown level 5 last year to ensure people adhere to the lockdown regulations.
