We romanticize the past by remembering either its potential or the warming emotions tied to it. There’s comfort and security in what we know and are familiar with. Yet, we seldom realize how the past was a different time, perceived by a less experienced mind. When we rely on memories and the emotions that come with them, we blind ourselves to the reality of the situation. We are all familiar with the saying “history repeats itself,” and yet, hardly anyone applies it to their life. Once an awareness of self develops, destructive patterns like this come to the light so we can have the choice of doing something different. Idealizing the past is not a bad thing, but to constantly retreat to what was only hinders one’s inner growth.
