A LARGE CROWD CAME TO HIM AND HE BEGAN TO TEACH THEM.

Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet people still came to him from everywhere.

As He walked along, He saw Levi Son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector's booth.

MOSAIC LAW
"If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not be like a moneylender; charge him no interest" (Exodus 22:25)
TWO PURPOSES
1. An interest-bearing loan would only help plunge the poor into deeper poverty.
2. God promised a blessing on the gracious lender that would far surpass any interest he would make.
LEVITES
The lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as he promised them.
MARK 2:14
Jesus saw him.
"Follow Me," Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
MATTHEW

MARK 2:15-16
15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the "sinners" and tax collectors, they asked His disciples: "Why does He eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?"
EATING TOGETHER
Jesus identified with us in order that He might redeem us.
PHARISEE CHARACTERISTICS
Meticulous observance of obligations under the law for purity, tithing, and Sabbath.
Emphasis on oral law, which was a equally binding to the written law.
MARK 2:17
On hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
WHILE WE WERE BROKEN
"God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
WE ARE CALLED
Jesus calls us to follow him in the midst of our brokenness.
