Thunderstorms set to rumble through the mid-Atlantic Thursday will not only trim the heat but could also pack a punch in terms of severe weather, AccuWeather meteorologists warn. Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., could all experience strong to severe storms Thursday, potentially causing disruptions during the Thursday evening commute around the travel hubs. Plus, watching the Tropics as the Atlantic hurricane season’s first tropical depression, and potentially the first tropical storm, could form in a matter of days.

An unsettled and at times stormy Memorial Day weekend is forecast for the Northeast, AccuWeather meteorologists say. However, unlike in 2021, when the unofficial start to the summer season was marred by cold weather and persistent rain, this holiday weekend will turn out warmer and may turn out to be dry by Memorial Day itself. Plus, with the official start of hurricane season less than a week away, could there be an early tropical development?

A major spell of heat arrived in the Northeast this weekend, bringing the season's highest temperatures for many and even setting daily records for some. Temperatures have already surged above 90 degrees Fahrenheit in some locations, with AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures exceeding 100 in the toastiest spots on Saturday and the heat is not expected to let up in some locations in the Northeast.
AccuWeather forecasters say that while locations in the Appalachians and Ohio Valley will have a sharp cooldown on Sunday as a front slides through, a bulge in the jet stream will continue to act as a roadblock in the atmosphere, keeping hot weather in place closer to the East Coast.
AccuWeather's Bernie Rayno (@AccuRayno) and Kristina Shalhoup (@ShalhoupWX) have the details on that plus storms for the west on today's "Weather Insider" Podcast!
