Session 2: Listening Well to My Soul & God

Table Time- Introduction

  1. Share your name and best part of your week.
  2. How does a persons thought life affect their actions, behaviors, feelings, etc.? Why?
  3. How aware do you think people are of their thought life? Why do you think that is?
  4. Teaching Time: (Prov. 20:5, 2 Cor. 10:5, Lk. 6:45, Ps. 131)

    1. What is the goal of listening to my soul? (Prov. 20:5)
    2.              The Roots of your Worship determine the Fruits of your Behavior

      1. How do we listen to the heart?
      2.              Listen to your Thoughts (2 Cor. 10:5)

                             What are you constantly day-dreaming about?

                             Where does your mind go when it’s disengaged?

                             What reactive thoughts about people and circumstances do you have?

            2. Listen to your Words (Luke 6:45)

                            What are you repeatedly talking about?

                            What comes out of your mouth in a moment of frustration?

                            What slips out of your mouth that you regret?

             3. Our Thoughts & Words Expose our Wants & Worship

        When should you listen to your thoughts & words?

        1. In the moment
        2. After the Moment
        3. The Lost Art of Contemplation & Journaling

        5. Barriers to Listening to the Heart
        6. Why should you listen to your heart?
          1. An unexamined heart eventually wreaks havoc on your life
          2. It leads to the real problem (worship) which leads to the real solution (a better worship)
          3. So you can love God with all your heart, mind, and strength (Matt. 22:37)
          4. Table Time- Application
          5. What are some frequent/recurring problematic thoughts that people have?
          6. What are some of the effects of these problematic thoughts in their life & relationships?
          7. What are some things that might really be going on in the heart that cause these problematic thoughts? What might these thoughts show what a person worships & wants (Purpose, Security, Fulfillment)?
          8. APPLY: At least one time this week stop and record any problematic recurring thoughts or feelings that you observe. Write some specifics. (Anger, insecurity, anxiety, fear, frustration, stress)
          9. How much was the same from last week?
          10. How much was different from last week?
          11. What themes/ patterns do you see? (Times, places, people, etc.)
