Tigers 4, Royals 3 – Mize, Cabrera help Tigers send Royals to 5th straight loss
Casey Mize turned in his eighth quality start in his last nine games, Miguel Cabrera got two more hits and the Detroit Tigers beat Kansas City 4-3. The Royals lost their fifth in a row. Mize allowed three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. Gregory Soto pitched the ninth for his sixth save in as many chances. Cabrera, stuck in a slump for most of the season, doubled and singled to drive in one run and score another. He had three hits in Monday night’s win over the Royals.
White Sox 3, Rays 0 – Keuchel crisp thru 7, leads White Sox past Rays 3-0
Dallas Keuchel pitched seven innings of crisp four-hit ball to win his fifth straight decision, leading the Chicago White Sox past the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0. Adam Engel hit a home run and Tim Anderson had three hits as the White Sox bounced back from a 5-2 loss on Monday in matchup of the teams with the two best records in the majors. Danny Mendick drove in a run and set up another as Chicago won for the fifth time in six and ended Tampa Bay’s four-game winning streak.
Mets 3, Cubs 2 – Walker strikes out career-high 12 to lead Mets over Cubs 3-2
Taijuan Walker struck out a career-high 12, Pete Alonso drove in three runs and the surging New York Mets threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth inning of a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Walker allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings, and he walked none for the third time. Walker had struck out 11 seven times previously, all before he had Tommy John surgery on April 25, 2018. The right-hander has a 2.12 ERA, and the Mets are unbeaten in his six home starts.

MLB – White Sox sparkplug Madrigal out for year after surgery
Chicago White Sox second baseman Nick Madrigal will miss the rest of the season after having surgery to repair tears in his right hamstring. The AL Central leaders, who have overcome significant injuries this season, said Madrigal was expected to be fully recovered by next spring. Madrigal was hurt last week trying to beat out a grounder. Chicago had put him on the 60-day injured list and held out hope he might recover to play again this year. The 24-year-old rookie had been a sparkplug for the White Sox, hitting .305 while scoring 30 runs and driving in 21 over 54 games.
MLB – Cubs' Kris Bryant hit on hand by Walker pitch, leaves game
Cubs star Kris Bryant by a pitch from Taijuan Walker in the first inning and left Chicago’s game against the New York Mets in the middle of the second with what the team said was a bruised right hand. Bryant initially stayed in the game after he was hit by a first-pitch 93.4 mph sinker, then went to run at first base. He was at third base for the second time since April 20. In a 6-for-41 slide after a hot start, Bryant is batting .292 with 13 homers and 39 RBIs.
MLB – MLB threatens pitchers with 10-game bans for altering balls
Pitchers will be ejected and suspended for 10 games for using illegal foreign substances to doctor baseballs in a crackdown by Major League Baseball that will start Monday. The move announced by the commissioner’s office comes in response to record strikeouts and a league batting average at its lowest since 1968. The commissioner's office says major and minor league umpires will start regular checks of all pitchers, even if opposing managers don’t request inspections.
