Jack Allison’s Journal, Stardate: 2205.14

At this point in my journey I sense a certain dread clarity about me. The walls appear closer, dirtier than they’ve ever been, and the view from the outside: lusterless and bleak. Is this truly how I lived so long ago? Sober. Content to trod upon dull clods of earth and man made stone with deadened sense? To be like an insect unaware of the ceaseless —endless skies that swirl and dance atop my very head? Journal —my old friend...I fear this will be the end of me, the unraveling of the man to which they call “Jack”. It appears that I have finally sought that hill, the one to which we are all destined, whose surmounting precedes the truth of no retreats, and no returns. If that be the truth then... If this third entry is to be my last, remember me as I was in the previous two entries, a young man with just a bit of weed still in his system, thinking that he could take on the world —himself. How foolish ...how brave. It’s funny as I sit here, my body breaking down in the 72nd hour since I've last had weed in my system, ready to embrace the end, I think of Icarus and how he flew too close to the sun. I think of this poor foolish dreamer and can’t help but envy him, just a bit, because in the end at least he had wax to burn...
