Week 12: The Inward Disciplines

Listen Later

Richard Foster’s book title, Celebration of Discipline, works so well to communicate both the challenge and the joy of being a follower of Jesus.

John 15:9-17

Revelation 3:20 “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

Spiritual disciplines are the means by which you open the door of your heart to fully offer yourself to Jesus.

01. Meditation.

Christian meditation is the ability to hear God’s voice and obey his word.

The purpose of meditation is friendship with God.

Distraction and hurry are the enemy of meaningful meditation.

The best way to develop the practice of meditation is through trial and error over time.

The only way to learn to meditate is by meditating.

Psalm 63:1-5 1

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land
where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods, with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

02. Prayer.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Rejoice always, pray continually, give, thanks in all circumstances; for this is God‘s will for you in Christ Jesus.

ACTS Prayer Model:

Adoration (wonderful things about Jesus)

Confession (of your sins and help with temptation & forgiveness)

Thanksgiving (what are you grateful for?)

Supplication (asking for God’s help for yourself and others)

The Lord‘s Prayer Model:

Our Father in heaven, holy is your name

Thank him for his love for you. Praise him for his character.

Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

What does God want in your life? … in the lives of others?

Give us today our daily bread

Financial, emotional, spiritual needs for yourself and others

Forgive us our debts as we have forgiven our debtors.

Confess your sin to God. Pray for God to help those who’ve hurt you.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Help me see the devil coming. Help me want to want You!

For Yours in the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen

It’s not about me or my feelings. I give myself to you, Jesus.

If you’re new to prayer, you need to watch out for distraction, boredom and resistance.

03. Fasting

The point of fasting is to awaken a greater hunger for Jesus.

The same emotional and spiritual muscles you use in fasting are the same muscles you use to resist sin.

The beauty of fasting is that every single hunger pain you have points your heart toward Jesus.

What to expect from your body: hunger, headaches, weakness, confusion.

What to expect from your spirit: freedom, strength, clarity, love.

Share your plan to fast with someone for accountability.

04. Study

The most important part of Bible study is consistency.

The SOAP Bible Study Method:

Scripture (read it and write it out)

Observation (look at the context, what words stand out, who is the audience)

Application (what does it mean to live this out?)

Prayer (pray the scripture, personalize it, ask God for help applying it)

Make a plan: When I will study. What I will study.

05. Singing

Singing is one of the primary ways we connect emotionally with God.

Sing of God’s goodness, faithfulness and love and watch your soul get stronger!

Make a Plan:

When you will meditate:

What you will meditate on:

When you will do focused prayer:

How you will pray (walking, sitting, ACTS, Lord’s Prayer …):

When you will fast:

How you will engage God during the fast:

When you will study:

What you will read or use:

When you will sing:

What you will use to express your heart to God:
