We only open ourselves to change when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of changing. Life change is hard because there are very good parts of the old life that we are moving away from. Lamenting their loss allows us to be open to the possibility that God will do a new thing in us.
Poem referenced in the sermon:
Later that night
I held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered, "where does it hurt?"
It answered,
everywhere, everywhere, everywhere."
