Galatians 3 is a polemic for justification through faith in Christ alone.
3:1-5 The Vanity of Returning to the Law
Paul firmly rebukes in love for straying to another gospel (Prov 27:6) (Luke 24:25)
It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified.
Preaching sets forth Christ crucified painted in words for the eyes of faith to conceive
Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?
Works of the law and faith in Christ are set in contradistinction
Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?
If you started by faith in Christ for justification, are you sanctified now by your own works?
This is THE persistent error of the church: starting with Christ, finishing by works.
Did you suffer so many things in vain–if indeed it was in vain?
Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by
Repetition emphasized the folly of the leaving the simple gospel and returning to the law
3:7-9 The Example of Abraham
Paul appeals to Abraham to expose the folly of the Judaizer’s teaching
Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.
We must labor to be in deed and in truth of the faith of Abraham and to walk in the steps of faith
And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.”
We see the antiquity of the the gospel of the covenant of grace in Christ Jesus
So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
3: 10-14 Christ Made a Curse
For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”
If you would enter eternal life, you must keep the whole law of God perfectly
Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”
The fault is not in the law (which is holy and good and even promises life) but in the sinner (Rom 7)
But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.”
The law as a covenant of works cannot save fallen man. Therefore, our hope is in one who fulfilled
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us–for it is written, “Cursed is
Christ took on humanity for this purpose- and being the second Adam he could represent us
The promise of Abraham’s seed to be a blessing to all the nations is here confirmed (Gen 22:18)
Application : The gospel is of free grace. This is the hardest doctrine for human nature to grasp.
