I hate being out of control, my natural tendency is to try and get control back. Today's message we are going to look at ways we all try and get control back spiritually and the way faith offers a better path forward. What do you do when you feel out of control?
Genesis 15:1-6 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield,[a] your very great reward.[b]” 2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit[c] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.” 4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring[d] be.” 6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
Galatians 3:1-14 You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?[a] 4 Have you experienced[b] so much in vain—if it really was in vain? 5 So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard? 6 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[c]
“After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?”
Listen to what Paul says about those who abandon faith to try and control their circumstances through law - being good
7 Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. 8 Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”[d] 9 So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”[e] 11 Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.”[f] 12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.”[g] 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”[h] 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
Let me see if I can synthesize what Paul is saying here...
Living by the law is trying to get to God through your own effort - no one can do it. Christ died to redeem you from the curse of effort through law. Follow in Abe’s footsteps…
Listen, it’s not that Faith is devoid of effort - it’s just a matter of what you are “efforting” towards
-He left his home country
-He had union with his wife
-He had to live every day with patience and waiting
What most of us effort towards when we feel out of control spiritually is trying to out good or bad - obeying the law
I’ve said this before, but I’m going to say it again
It means looking for the moments God is going to move-I sometimes work from Starbucks on my sermons - I literally sit in there constantly praying and asking God if there is anything He wants me to say or do
Expectancy is looking for the “God” opportunity
Expectancy requires actively engaging Jesus in the prayer of, “what’s next Jesus?
