Weekend Getaway is the new novella by the author of Haven, the 2016 Bram Stoker Winner for Superior Achievement in a First Novel. This new work is decidedly different in tone from his debut work, a lovely coming of age story. Weekend Getaway has more in common with some of Jack Ketchum's more graphic works than his own novel. And it's every bit as good.
In the words from the introduction by Josh Malerman "Weekend Getaway is as much a gulp of Jolt  Cola as it is a quick snap of a rubber band on the wrist. Itâs smart, small, and (undoubtedly) effective."
At its purest, Weekend Getaway is the story of how John Baxter lost his finger. After the loss of their child, John and his wife of off for a weekend getaway to a cabin in the woods, a place John found and booked online. Needless to say, things did not turn out as planned.
There are plenty of unexpected twists to keep the reader guessing from start to finish, making Weekend Getaway one of the best novellas I've read in 2017.
Recommended, for sure.

Review: WEEKEND GETAWAY by Tom Deady
WEEKEND GETAWAY is one incredible book. I easily understand how his debut novel won a Bram Stoker Award. WEEKEND GETAWAY is so powerful that I am literally speechless. I am awestruck. I am also one grateful reader. Recommended to me by its publisher, and highly commended in the Foreword by astonishing author Josh Malerman, WEEKEND GETAWAY at first seems to hold the type of story premise I like to avoid {but instead am magnetically drawn to the way some like to slow down to study traffic accidents}: home invasion. That particular crime that used to be classified as "Breaking and Entering, with Robbery." It also seemed to possibly veer toward that other story premise I like to avoid: Cabin in the Woods-Isolation--Bad Folks With No Moral Compass. You know what I mean: where the horror is implacable not because it's supernatural or paranormal or because your long-distant ancestor got cursed by a gypsy. No, in these two modes, the terror is implacable because these bad folks are sociopaths, some are psychotic, and armed with (Pick One): guns, knives, machetes, hatchets, axes, baseball bats, and blowtorches.
