Welcome to F1GMAT's weekend updates for the week ending August 20, 2022. I am Atul Jose.
Harvard Business School (HBS), on 16 August 2022, announced that it would provide scholarships to cover the course fees and total cost of tuition for students with the greatest financial need, or approximately 10% of its student body. This initiative has been taken to make the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree more affordable and accessible to a broader range of students. The School will also provide scholarship assistance to more students from middle-income families, adding to the approximately 50% of students who currently receive scholarships. These two major changes will benefit current and future students and are the latest in a decade-long effort to reduce financial barriers to enrolment in the two-year full-time MBA Program.
Harvard Business school has worked for several years to make the MBA Program affordable for students from various socioeconomic backgrounds. Recent initiatives taken by Harvard include keeping tuition flat since 2019; launching the Forward Fellowship, which provides additional funding to students who provide financial support to family members while attending business school; revising the financial aid formula to include assets, socioeconomic background in addition to personal income, and undergraduate debt; along with a need-based application fee waiver.
HBS has also pushed for socioeconomic inclusion by reaching out to first-generation college graduates and prospective applicants from various backgrounds and paths.
HBS awards need-based scholarships to approximately half of its students, with the amount ranging from a few thousand dollars to more than $60,000 per year. In 2021-2022, the average annual need-based scholarship was $42,000 ($84,000 over the two-year period).
The MBA financial aid budget at Harvard Business School exceeds $45 million due to annual gifts and over 750 named fellowship funds from generous HBS alumni and friends committed to supporting the next generation of Harvard students.
With the School's additional commitment, approximately 10% of all HBS students with the greatest financial need will receive a $76,000 tuition and course fee scholarship for each year of the two-year program.

Flex is the hybrid online/on-campus option for Haas Evening and Weekend MBA Program.
Berkeley Haas wants to prioritize attendance flexibility, adapt to changing environments, and allow learning from anywhere.
The Berkeley Haas Evening and Weekend MBA Program has five cohorts, one of which is the Flex cohort.
Except for Orientation, the Leadership Communications weekend immersion, and the Mid Program Academic Review capstone course, the Flex cohort will take all its core classes online, with approximately half synchronous or live instruction and half asynchronous content such as recorded content, and discussion boards.
Students can take core courses online from wherever it is most convenient for them during the first half of the program. For about half of the coursework, students will meet online at a set time each week - Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Pacific Time. The remaining tasks will be completed on a timetable that works for the students.
When students begin taking elective courses, they can continue to attend online or come to campus for in-person instruction, giving them the best of both worlds.
If students choose to take their electives online, they are only required to attend three signature immersion events strategically scheduled throughout the program, with two additional optional in-person events.
The major Signature immersion events included in the FLEX MBA program at Haas are WE Launch, Leadership Communication, Re-Launch, Mid Program Academic review, and WE Lead.
Wharton was the 2nd school this week to launch the Global MBA Program for Executives
The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania announced on August 16, 2022, its intention to expand global access to its MBA Program for Executives by launching its first-ever global cohort, with a program start date of May 2023. Those accepted into the new cohort will be business professionals from Asia, North America, Latin America, Europe, and elsewhere who will benefit from Wharton's world-class faculty and network through a blended online/in-person learning format.
The same renowned Wharton professors who teach Wharton full-time MBA students will be available for the course. Faculty will use their extensive online teaching skills for the 22-month program.
The new Global Executive MBA cohort is 25% in-person and 75% online with professors. Virtual instruction will take place in the early morning or late evening hours, eastern standard time. This will allow students to plan around their work schedules and participate from multiple time zones. Students will spend significant time together in person during "residential weeks" at Wharton's Philadelphia and San Francisco campuses. Throughout the program, students will be supported by classroom managers. They will have regular direct contact with senior faculty who are distinguished experts in their fields. Students will also have access to Wharton's global network of over 100,000 alumni.
Every year, the Wharton MBA Program for Executives educates over 230 professionals while maintaining the same academic rigor and faculty as Wharton's full-time MBA program.
Wharton is accepting applications for the inaugural Global Executive MBA program, which will begin in May 2023.
