(to) Drop points

This week’s English for football phrase is ‘drop points‘ and this is used in football to describe when a team does not win all three points from a match, particularly when that team has been winning during the game. We can think of it as ‘losing’ 2 or 3 points from a game. The phrase is also commonly seen or heard when teams challenging for the title fail to win a game (and their rivals do) and so they have dropped points on their title rivals. For example, Real Madrid cannot afford to drop points this weekend against Valencia or their title chances will disappear. To drop points.
