In 1880 well-known astronomer, Edward Pickering, made a remark that his Scottish maid could do a better job than one of his colleagues. He then hired her on to help with the catalog he was developing, and it would turn out that his remark was correct. In addition, Williamina Fleming not only made a decades-long, high-reputation career as an astronomer, but would pave the way for more women in Victorian-era sciences. She would also head the Harvard Computers- an all-female astronomy team, tasked with analyzing and classifying stars in the late 1800s.
