Condoms have been used both as a method of birth control and as a protective measure against sexually transmitted diseases for hundreds of years.
The condom is a thin sheath that covers an erect penis to prevent blood, semen, and vaginal fluids passing between people during sexual penetration of the vagina or anus. Today they are usually made from latex, polyisoprene or polyurethane. If condoms are used correctly, they provide up to 98 percent protection from pregnancy, and around 85 percent protection from HIV.
