Welcome Snow to Athens
Today it snows in Athens and I love it. It’s cold, the snow is pelting down like rain. You hear laughter on the streets as cars are stationary and the noise is minimal, people are happy to see snow. It’s almost silent, now and then you can hear the water part as the car tyres slide on the road. Men look like bears in their check wood chopper shirts. Ladies have fury hats, boots and wonderful scarves.
People brave the streets, to admire the beauty. Yet the streets now as the sleet and rain mix has fallen are slippery.
I heated my Fasoulada, beansoup. One needs warm food your body calls for it on a cold day. Fasoulda is my favorite Greek warm meal. I’m having barley Cretan rusks with it and Anthotyro cheese, low fat. I feel wonderful. I can smell the cold, if you know what I mean, for now the light is good. The snow is fresh and clean, our city looks reborn.
We waited for winter, our bodies needed it. We had enough of this unusual weather. We wore shorts over Christmas. We missed the snowman, holly, chestnuts and fireplaces.
This change is wonderful as momentarily, even if it’s just for today we are warm indoors, feeling good, Covid fear is temporarily forgotten. We feel almost normal. Welcome snow to Athens, we were waiting for you.
