Hi, everyone! Welcome to Education for Sustainable Democracy – a new show about how we can prepare the next generation for informed civic engagement, environmental stewardship, and the development of a more just and peaceful world.
My name’s Brett Levy, and I’m a researcher of civic and environmental education and an associate professor at the University at Albany, State University of New York. Like a lot of you, I’ve become pretty concerned about the health of our democracy and our planet. But as we’ve seen recently and throughout history, if we work together, we can make things better – and young people can play a central role in that process.
For the past 12 years, I’ve been exploring how educational programs can help young people become well-informed, active civic participants. I’m starting this show to spread the word about some of the great work that’s been going on this this area, including the latest research, and I hope you’ll join me to learn about these exciting developments.
Episodes will feature interviews with leaders, innovators, and scholars in civic and environmental education. You’ll hear about new classroom-based and online practices that generate students’ involvement in public issues, youth-adult partnerships that improve communities, what research tells us about how to broaden young people’s engagement in environmental issues, and more.
