Over the past weekend, communities from far and wide commemorated World Suicide Prevention Day. According to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group, there are an estimated 23 suicides per day in South Africa and for every one of them there are at least 230 attempted suicides. Local experts warn that many people who suffer from mental health issues either don’t know where to get help, or refuse to do so due to stigma. This year’s theme is “Creating hope through action” and it reflects the need for collective action by every member of our communities to address this urgent public health issue
