The West badly over-estimated the impact of its sanctions on Russia after the Special Military Operation in Ukraine. The West’s first mistake was underestimating the scale of the Russian economy. Perversely, sanctions have functioned as a kind of externally imposed protectionism and have rather boosted Russia’s economic growth.
