Rin Tin Tin was derived from a radio program which aired on the NBC Blue network and on Mutual Radio from 1930 - 1955, which was in turn derived from a series of movie serials produced between 1923 - 1930; nothing more universal it would seem than the appeal of a boy and his dog.
